Change your story.Change your life.

The right insight at the right moment can change what happens next.

Life doesn't wait until you've finished a course, read a book, or scheduled an appointment.

Questions come up in the middle of living. Something happens. You're confused, frustrated, curious, or facing a decision. You want to understand what's going on, right now, and what you can do about it.

That's when a good answer matters most.

For decades, I've helped people understand themselves and their lives. But there's always been an access problem: You couldn't get my help WHENEVER you needed it.

Pocket Julie changes that.

It puts 50+ years of studying, teaching, and practicing psychological science within reach, “in your pocket,” 24/7.

Ask your own questions. Privately. Get answers grounded in psychological science and my life's work.

Because what you understand right now can change what you do next.

Why this one is different

Real science. One trusted source.

There's no shortage of advice about how to live your life. Some of it is excellent. Some is questionable. And much of it is impossible to evaluate. Pocket Julie is different.

Its foundation is more than 50 years of my studying, teaching, and practicing psychological science. Thousands of questions I've answered, concepts I've taught, and practical applications I've developed, all organized into one growing knowledge base we call The Julie Brain.

One coherent source

Rather than collecting advice from countless voices across the internet, Pocket Julie draws on one consistent body of psychological knowledge and experience.

The Julie Brain

Think of it as a library containing thousands of pieces of my life's work. The technology acts as a well-trained librarian, finding and assembling relevant information to answer your specific questions.

My standards

I review and approve the foundational answers that go into The Julie Brain. We continue expanding and improving it, guided in part by the questions members ask and the feedback they provide.

Because saying yes is doing something for you. It might be helping you avoid conflict, disappointment, guilt, or the possibility that someone will think less of you.

You may have learned long ago that being agreeable, helpful, or accommodating was a good way to maintain relationships. And perhaps it was. But here's the important distinction: Something that worked well for you in the past may be costing you more than it's giving you now.

The goal isn't to become someone who says no more often. It's to become someone who makes deliberate choices about when to say yes.

A tactic that helps is to “pause” before saying yes or no. Perhaps, “let me think about that and give you a call tomorrow.” During the pause, make a deliberate choice to say YES or to say NO.

How do I say no without the guilt trip afterward? What do I do when someone keeps pushing after I say no?

Handwriting activates deeper neural pathways for processing and growth. Keyboarding a response yields only about a third of the value compared to writing by hand.

Journaling & Reflection

Better questions. Deeper understanding.

Sometimes a good question changes how you see something, even if you never write down an answer.

Pocket Julie gives you thoughtful prompts designed to help you examine your assumptions, recognize patterns, and discover something about yourself you hadn't considered before. Every reflection and journal entry can help build a picture of how you're thinking, what matters to you, and what's changing over time.

Guided, not blank

Fresh prompts give you something meaningful to think about. No staring at an empty page wondering where to begin.

Think it through. Or write it down.

I strongly recommend handwriting in your own journal. But for those moments when inspiration strikes and your journal isn't handy, Pocket Julie has a place to capture your thoughts right then and there. And even if you never write a word, the thinking itself is valuable.

Your personal reflections

What you write in your Pocket Julie journal isn't posted to the community or made visible to other members. Your entries are saved in your account so you can return to them, revisit an insight, recognize a pattern, or notice how your thinking has changed.

The value isn't in filling pages. It's in discovering something worth knowing about yourself.

Play · Myth Busters

Thousands of opportunities to think differently.

We all carry around beliefs about relationships, happiness, anxiety, parenting, success, and ourselves. Some are useful. Some were once useful. And some simply aren't true. The trouble is, we rarely stop to question them.

That's why I've written more than 3,000 Myth Busters, each designed to challenge a familiar assumption and help you see something differently.

3,210myths in the library

Each one challenges a familiar assumption and gives you four things:

  1. The mythA belief you may have accepted without ever questioning it.
  2. The psychological scienceWhat research and experience tell us about that belief.
  3. Why it made senseAn opportunity to understand why you might have developed or held onto that belief in the first place.
  4. Something to take with youA fresh perspective you can use in your everyday life.

And when a myth really gets your attention, there's a journaling prompt to help you explore it further.

You can't reconsider a belief until you recognize that you have it.

Connect

Good company. Great conversations.

There's something wonderful about being around people who are curious about themselves, interested in other people, and willing to reconsider what they think they know. That's the kind of community we're building inside Pocket Julie.

You can ask questions, exchange ideas, share discoveries, and learn from people whose experiences and perspectives may be very different from your own. You decide how much, or how little, you participate.

A community worth joining

Join conversations about relationships, choices, happiness, challenges, and everyday life. Sometimes the most useful insight comes from someone else's experience.

A special place for Founders

Founding members have their own exclusive group, where on occasion I'll personally participate. It's an informal place to talk with me, share ideas, tell us what's working (and what isn't), and help shape Pocket Julie as it grows.

Come for the psychological science. Stay for the people you meet along the way.

Learn

Go deeper. Whenever you want.

Sometimes a good answer is enough. Other times, a question sparks your curiosity and you want to understand much more. That's where Pocket Julie's learning library comes in.

Explore psychological science through lessons I've developed and taught over decades, organized to help you understand important ideas and apply them to your own life. Choose a topic that interests you, learn at your own pace, and return whenever you want.

  1. Focused learning

Short lessons that explore a particular question, challenge, or psychological concept. Learn something useful in a single sitting.

  2. Learn in a sequence

For subjects worth exploring more deeply, follow a thoughtfully organized series of video lessons. I'll guide you through the concepts, often using mind maps, examples, and practical applications.

  3. Explore what interests you

Relationships, happiness, willpower, parenting, resilience, and more. Follow your curiosity rather than someone else's schedule.

  4. Your learning, in one place

Access the learning materials included in your membership, along with eligible programs you've previously purchased, from one convenient location.

A question might take two minutes to answer. Understanding the subject might become a lifelong interest.
